would i do more good by getting a job ; taking public transportation and volunteering with mexican community ?

January 4th, 2009

i am wondering what is better- would i do more good by being a foreign exchange student or staying home, getting a job; using public transportation and volunteering in the hispanic community; i figure i could get fluent in Spanish and use greener transportation instead of just driving my self around. My friends say I should go because my parents can afford it and I will be more rounded. What does more rounded mean anyway? It seems like the kids who have gone just turn into big snobs and brag- they dont seem to care about those around them- just trying to make an impression all the time.

Are peaceful Gazans being permitted to flee to safety?

January 4th, 2009

or do the Israeli blockades, walls and fences serve to imprison them in the carnage?

Is there anywhere they can flee to safety?
OpenYourEyes: Good point. I understand Israel's ban from allowing journalists into Gaza (first implemented early November and lifted early December) is now back in play.

Desertviking: Thanks. Do you have an independent source (other than Israeli mainstream media) that indicates the crossing was actually opened. I had read that Egypt had agreed to do so but no indication as to when and whether it was actually done.
Casimir2121. Thanks. I fear you are may be absolutely correct about Egypt. See this news report TODAY from France 24 International News.

There is an embedded video on that page.

It isn't looking promising for people wanting to escape.
Some quotes from that France 24 International news report:

"AFP - Egyptian police fired in the air near the Gaza border town of Rafah on Sunday to prevent Palestinians entering Egypt after Israel launched air strikes to destroy tunnels along the tense frontier.

Dozens of civilians tried to break through the Barahma crossing after Israel launched air strikes along the Gaza-Egypt border. They were repelled by Egyptian police firing in the air," the official said.

Some Palestinians managed to climb over the border wall into Egypt, with riot police reinforcements being sent to the frontier on the second day of Israel's assault on the Gaza Strip that has killed more than 280 people.

A security services official said Egypt had then shut the Rafah crossing and police were searching for the Palestinians who had managed to enter Egyptian territory."

Baby Legs Caught In The Crib Railing?

January 4th, 2009

My six month old is very rolly in his sleep. Today he woke up screaming from his nap because his leg was caught in the rail, all the way up past the knee. We have a bumper pad but what else can I do to stop it?
If not bumper pads, then what? He will beat himself black and blue without them. He kicks like a Rockett and rolls all over the place…
